Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM)
Lima dates back to the early 16th century when Francisco Pizarro, a Spanish conquistador, founded the city. Since then, Lima has grown into a South American capital that is diverse with archaeological sites, plazas, cathedrals, museums and even beaches.
Much of the lure of this South American city is it's history shrouded in the historic museums, churches and palaces around every corner. The Plaza de Armas, also known as the Plaza Mayor, was built in the 1920's and includes multiple palaces, a bronze fountain, and the Cathedral of Lima. It is thought to be the exact place Pizarro established the city in 1535. The changing of the guards is a fascinating exchange to witness and takes place in front of the Palacio del Gobierno every day at noon.
The Miraflores district of Peru is filled with shopping, gardens and beaches. Known as an upscale neighborhood to locals, Miraflores is a good place for tourists to stay because it's packed with hotels, cafés, pubs, theaters and art galleries. It really is a convenient cultural hub for all of your entertainment needs while in Lima.
A wealth of Peruvian beaches exist just beyond the Lima city limits. Grab a board and learn how to surf at any of the beaches. The prime time to hit the waves is from April to October, but the warm climate makes the beach a good destination any time of year. So if you're heading to the sandy coast to soak up some rays, sun is never out of season.
