Port-au-Prince Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP)
Few places have suffered as much tragedy as Port-au-Prince in recent years. The 7,0 earthquake that struck the Haitian capital in January, 2010 devastated the city and destroyed much of its historic center. But the Haitian people's spirit and resilience in the wake of the disaster inspired the world, and the city has become a cause célèbre for celebrities, such as the likes of Wyclef Jean, George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey and Sean Penn. Rebuilding efforts are still very much underway, with slow but steady progress. Though it might take years to completely rebuild this historic city, it's making its way back.
Port-au-Prince is the gateway to the mountainous Caribbean nation, and many of Haiti's leaders believe that tourism will drive the country's recovery. Parts of Haiti — its north region and coast, and southwest — were not impacted by the earthquake.
Haiti's crown jewel remains the Citadelle Laferrière, one of the great historical sights in the Caribbean and indeed all of North America. Located on the north coast, near the city of Cap-Haïtien, the fortress sits on a 3,000-foot mountain and towers above the country as a symbol of freedom in the world's first successful slave rebellion. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982 and remains a monument to the possibility still alive in this recovering nation.
