Self-proclaimed as America's "Most Walkable City", Indianapolis is best known for faster means of getting around. The Indianapolis 500 started over 100 years ago, and still revs its engine each May to the delight of many a sports fan.

Today, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway brings in thousands of spectators each year. During a neck-and-neck race it's a great place to be. But if you can't make it to the speedway on a race day, the Indianapolis Hall of Fame Museum exhibits about 75 vehicles ranging from winning cars to historic roadsters; it has momentous race footage and highlights; and it even hosts guided tours of the track.

More than a Sports Town

For those less sports-minded folks, however, Indianapolis also indulges in arts and culture and has a surprisingly diverse shopping scene. The Circle Centre Mall is connected to several hotels by way of a skywalk which makes for convenient browsing, and small boutiques downtown and throughout the city make good use of the city's walkability.

See the nation's only urban state park, the White River State Park, by way of the Canal Walk, a three-mile path within the park. It's the perfect spot to jog off a few calories before you hit the downtown scene for dinner and its celebrated nightlife. The Slippery Noodle Inn is a blues haunt with a storied past, so get there in time to grab a table and lose yourself in the far away sounds of those trumpets blasting.
