Flights to Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is a mid-sized city located in western Pennsylvania at the junction of the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River, which together form the Ohio River and shape the downtown area, nicknamed the Golden Triangle.

The city’s history is steeped in industry, particularly the steel industry, and it’s where wealthy men like Andrew Carnegie, Henry J. Heinz, and George Westinghouse made their fortunes. Lucky for the residents of Pittsburgh, Carnegie used some of his wealth to improve the city’s quality of life by establishing a library and several arts institutions, making Pittsburgh a cultural center for the state.

Pittsburgh is home to three professional sports teams. The Steelers have won six NFL championships, the Penguins have won five Stanley Cups, and the Pirates have won the World Series five times.

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) has two terminals, called Landside and Airside, and four concourses serving 13 regional, international, and domestic airlines, including Delta Air Lines.

There’s a massage bar and military lounge in Concourse A, a Paint Monkey art studio and XpresSpa in Concourse B, and a children’s play area and a mother’s nursing lounge in Concourse C.

If you have time, be sure to check out the whimsical interactive art installation Fraley’s Robot Repair Shop in Concourse A.

When hunger strikes, options include Bruegger’s Bagels, Chick-fil-A, Cinnabon, Farm Fresh Deli, Green Beans Coffee, Penn Brewery, and The Strip Market.

Shopping options include Armani Jeans, Best Buy Express, Creative Kidstuff, GNC, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, PGA Tour Shop, and Metalsmiths Sterling.

  • The Port Authority provides bus service from the airport to downtown Pittsburgh on the 28X Airport Flyer
  • Taxi and car service pick up passengers at the Arrivals area outside baggage claim
  • Several car rental agencies have booths on the Baggage Claim of the Landside Terminal. Rental car pickup is on the lower level of the parking garage.
  • Uber, Lyft, Zride, and other rideshare services pick up passengers outside Baggage Claim Door No. 4.

Pittsburgh boasts four Carnegie museums, including the Carnegie Museum of Art, the first museum of contemporary art in the United States, and Carnegie Museum of Natural History, one of the top natural history museums in the country, featuring exhibits of dinosaur fossils, minerals, gems, bird dioramas, and a collection of live amphibians and reptiles.

The Andy Warhol Museum contains the largest collection of works by the revolutionary pop artist who died in 1987. It boasts a stunning collection of screen prints, films, photographs, and installations on eight floors.

Visit Point State Park, a 36-acre park in the point of the Golden Triangle, where you can fish, kayak, walk, cycle and run to your heart’s content.

It’s a 60-mile drive from Pittsburgh, but architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater is worth the time it takes to get there. Voted by the American Institute of Architects the most important building of the 20th century, it is the only remaining Wright house with the original artwork, furnishings, and grounds still intact.

Fairmont Pittsburgh is a steel and glass high-rise hotel in downtown Pittsburgh featuring 185 guest rooms and suites with floor-to-ceiling windows that reveal stunning views of the skyline, as well as PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Amenities include a restaurant, wine bar, and health club.

Classic elegance and history combine at the Omni William Penn Hotel, a 597-room hotel that originally opened in 1916 but has been fully renovated with modern conveniences and luxury comforts. The stately exterior belies the opulence to be found inside, particularly in the paneled fitness center and the two-tiered ballroom.

The Ace Hotel Pittsburgh is a trendy boutique hotel located in a century-old former YMCA building. It features a casual, minimalist design, and amenities include the Whitfield tavern, a lobby bar and a coffee bar.

Located in the humid continental climate zone, Pittsburgh experiences four distinct seasons. Winters are cold and snowy, summers are hot and humid, and spring and fall are fairly mild. The hottest months are July and August with average highs in the low-80s. The coldest months are January and February with lows in the low-20s. Precipitation is fairly steady throughout the year, averaging two to three inches a month. It averages 27 inches of snowfall a year.
