While Las Vegas is known across the world for the bright lights of the Strip, with its massive hotels and gaming casinos lining the street, venturing outside of the city can reveal some of the great natural sites of the Western United States. With the Mojave Desert within driving distance, visitors can spend the days exploring the surrounding deserts and the nights back in the “entertainment capital of the world” with some of the best dining, night clubs and live performance shows in the country. Flying into Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), Las Vegas visitors should be ready to get out and explore all of the offerings packed into lit-up city evenings.

Flying into Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), you’ll land right in the thick of things. The primary commercial airport is just three miles south of the city’s storied stretch of downtown known as “the Strip.” As one of the busiest airports in the world, Harry Reid International offers a taste of what you’ll find in downtown Las Vegas itself, with a wide selection of restaurants, shopping and even a number of slot machines stationed throughout the passenger terminals.

With world-famous nightlife and theme casinos like Paris and New York-New York, Las Vegas no doubt has a reputation as a playground for adults. But thanks to a wide variety of entertainment options, from theatrical productions to magic shows, amusement parks and rides, the city can also be a family-friendly destination.

GAMES

Las Vegas’ signature pastime is of course gambling. And it’s the city’s single-largest revenue producer, even ahead of its hotels, restaurants and nightclubs. There are no shortage of places to gamble throughout the city, starting from moments after your flight touches down. Whether your game is blackjack, poker, roulette or slots, you’re sure to find a seat at the table.

SHOWS

You can catch a show in Las Vegas at any time of day or night, whether you’re looking to be entertained by singers, dancers, magic or more. And thanks to entertainment like Cirque du Soleil and the Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage, there are sights to dazzle young senses as well. Many casinos offer free shows in addition to high-end, world class magic and music revues.

FOOD AND RESTAURANTS

A ticket to Las Vegas also means a ticket to one of the country’s best food scenes. These days, it’s moved well beyond the $1 buffet. Although those old school deals can still be found, the real culinary action is in hole-in-the-wall ethnic eateries and signature, destination restaurants from some of the finest chefs on the planet.

Check out Aria’s Bar Masa, which serves some of the best sushi you’ll ever find in the middle of the desert. Want a more traditional steakhouse experience? The Mandalay Bay’s StripSteak is 18 ounces of dry-aged bone-in Kobe rib eye. And for the ultimate culinary experience plus star treatment, book a table at Joel Robuchon’s three-star Michelin restaurant and schedule a prix-fixe dinner with roundtrip limo service.

POOLS AND SPAS

Proper attire in Las Vegas at some point most certainly includes a bathing suit. This oasis in the desert boasts pools and spas around every turn. Whether you’re looking to party, sunbathe, gamble or max out, there are countless spots to do it poolside. And of course if you’d rather soak or swim, you can do that too.

NIGHTLIFE

And when the sun goes down and the lights on the Strip come up, the Vegas see-and-be-seen atmosphere is at its height. Check out the action -and the people -at places like XS at Encore, the Venetian’s Tao, and Hard Rock’s Vanity, where a cyclone chandelier lit by more than 20.000 crystals pulses above the dance floor.

You’ve got tickets to Las Vegas, but now you’re wondering what to pack. Well, you’re in luck, because the weather is generally predictable and pleasant. With an average of 310 sunny days per year, rainfall is limited and bright sunshine is generally in abundance. Though the summer months are hot, with an average daytime high of 104.2°F in July, the winters are short and mild with the average December highs in the mid-50s°F.
